International runners have dominated the Melbourne Cup in recent years. Gold Trip was able to get the job done last year and starts second favourite this year. Drew Patchell has taken a look at what it takes to win the Melbourne Cup according to the Timeform ratings and also looked at each individual international runner for the race.

International runners have dominated the Cox Plate in recent years winning three of the past four races. Anamoe was able to get the job done last year but El Bodegon did go close off a low Timeform rating beaten half a length on the day. The Caulfield Cup signals the start of the real Spring racing carnival in my mind down in Victoria. We really get to see what is under the hood of all the internationals with core goals of the Cox Plate or Melbourne Cup. In recent years, the goal was to find a horse with a Timeform rating higher than 117 that is well enough weighted and maps well in the race. Durston blew that all away last year with the lowest Timeform rating to win the race this century. Before we get into the form, let’s see what it actually takes to win the Caulfield Cup on the Timeform ratings scale and then relate it to the form.
